A

Abribus showcase poster
Name loaned from French denoting large format posters for outdoor advertising, usually containing wood and strong adhesive

Adhesive posters
Posters glued to surfaces.

Advertising pillar
Advertising medium invented by Ernst Litfass, a printer from Berlin

Alignment
All of a poster’s sheets should have the same alignment since this affects the direction of hygroexpansivity.

Art paper
Smooth coated paper with matt, gloss and silk matt coat from starch, mineral coating pigments and synthetic resin pigments. The core paper may be wood-free or contain wood.

B

Big Easy
Large format ads on house facades or construction scaffolding These large images, up to 10,000 m2 in size, are digitally printed on vinyl fabrics (see BigEasy, page 41)

Bleed
Contoured images need a 3-5mm perimeter bleed beyond the final format so that no white overlaps become visible.

C

CityLightPoster (CLP)
showcase poster (format: 118.5 _ 175 cm.) These posters are backlit and thus require reverse printing. It refracts the light and prevents the lighting tubes from shining through.

CMYK
Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, Key. Conventional four-colour printing combines these colours.

Colour space
Tool used in colour metrics and in colour management in the production process, and the subject of different theories of colour. Colour spaces include, for instance, CMYK, RGB and Lab.

Computer-to-Plate (CTP)
Directly outputting a data batch to the printing plates without previous outputting onto a photographic film.

Computer-to-film (CTF)
The data is not directly outputted to printing plate as with CTP, but if first output onto to photographic film.

D

dispersion coating
Water-based dispersion coating provides high glossy effects and protects against wear and tear; scented coating as special option with mixed encapsulated fragrance oils.

Dpi
dots per inch, pixels per inch. Measurement unit for resolution for printers, displays and scanners. Displays have 72 dpi resolution, laser printers range from 300 to 600 dpi and scanners up to 11,000 dpi.

E

Euroadhesion
Adhesion using the “roof tiling principle”.  The upper sheet segments overlap the lower row. This makes posters more weather resistant.

Euroscale
A standardised colour chart used in Europe for four-colour printing (CYMK)

Eyecatchers
Decals or indentations

F

Font
Complete character set of a single lettering style

FSC (Forest Stewardship Council)
Is a non-governmental organisation established to promote international demand for forest products from socially and environmentally responsible market-driven forestry and, in the process, reduce the use of unsustainable harvesting prectices. FSC has established international principles and criteria as basic guidelines.

I

Inline coating
Oil-content or water-based coating applied during printing; low cost procedure, however not comparable in terms of quality with offline coating (dispersion, UV coating).

L

Large-size poster
Also called an 18-sheet poster (format: 356 _ 252 cm.) The term 18-sheet means the poster comprises 18 DIN A1 sheets.

Lpc
Large-size posters are usually printed with an lpc of 10/1 cm.

M

MGA-CORONA inks
is the world´s first low-migration, low-odour ink system for producing food-friendly food packaging. MGA inks and varnishes are organoleptically neutral and only contain substances that are non-toxic and that fall way below the statutory limits set.

Moiré
Error in half-toning image templates in four-colour printing. Superimposition causes a rosette pattern to appear.

O

Offset printing
Indirect planographic procedure. The print substrate is a coated metal plate. Up to six colours can be printed in one go.

Opacity
Measurement of how much light paper lets through

P

Pixel

Smallest unit from which a computer composes an image.

Proof
Used for control checks in the production process and for the customer to give clearance for printing, as well as a reference for the print run.

R

RGB
Red, green, blue (additive colour composition) are the primary colours

S

Sample print
Binding colour proof for checking before the print run

Sheet segmentation
Posters are printed and fused using a number of sheets, since printing and processing options are limited.

Synthetic paper
Is produced from plastic fibres (e.g., polyester or polyamide) on conventional paper-making machines or by way of plastic film extrusion (melting process). Synthetic paper has exceptional physical properties in terms of durability, water/gas-resistance, foldability and longevity. It can be produced for use in all methods of printing by adding natural fibres and/or surface finishing (e.g., coating).

T

Ten day period
Time period for which billboards for large format posters can be booked. The year is divided into 34 periods comprising alternatively ten or eleven days.

U

UV coating
Provides high gloss finishing, used especially for sales promotion purposes; partial UV coating can be used to achieve contrasts on matt materials (paper, film).
